if you grew up in texas in the ’80s you knew mel tillis, the country-western singer partially famous for having a stutter. although mel’s speech impediment didn’t affect his singing, he worked hard for years to rid himself of it, and whataburger helped. the texas-based, fast-food hamburger chain cast mel in a series of ads, with each commercial ending with his famous “whataburger!” tagline. i remember anticipating his tagline and even mimicking it, not out of mockery but out of reverence. and by the end of mel’s tenure as spokesman, his stutter was all but gone.
Whataburger is actually my favorite fast food burger of all time. Yes, I’ve had In-n-Out, but I still like Whataburger better. They also have the absolute best onion rings I’ve had anywhere. The badder is amazing.
Whataburger is what I miss the most.
